Welcome to Catherine Gurley Editorial Consulting!
I really go by the name of Katy, but Catherine sounds so much more dignified, doesn’t it? I’m formally named after my wonderful and charismatic Aunt Catherine on my writer father’s side. But I digress…
What you need to know about me professionally is that I am a veteran of the publishing industry and have worked on daily, weekly, monthly and one-off publications all my working life. I was a daily newspaper reporter for seven years and headed up the news section of InfoWorld Magazine, a business and technology publication, for several years, where I managed a large staff of reporters and writers. Using my well-honed editing and writing skills, I have done marketing and publicity for several non-profits and have produced conferences. And for the past several years, I have run my own writing and editing business. Which makes me entrepreneur-rish. I say that because, though I take my business very seriously, I provide a personal touch for all my clients and every job seems to be different. Hands on, I can tailor your needs to the project. In that way, I am not rigid in running my business. My fees are reasonable and negotiable.
I also provide written content and editing on time, every time. (Just ask and I will provide you with plenty of references.)
Here’s a list of the kind of editing and writing I do:
Writing:
- News stories;
- Features;
- Opinion pieces;
- Press Releases
- Marketing and promotional materials
(See the writing section of the Web site for samples.)
Editing, my speciality, is broken down into the following:
- Proofreading: Documents are carefully reviewed to ensure correct spelling, capitalization, word usage, punctuation, and grammar. Or, I can simply proof for typos.
- Copyediting: I proofread and make grammatical corrections and suggestions to improve editorial consistency. I correct such things as passive or run-on sentences and fragments to improve readability. For style standards, I use the most current Associated Press Stylebook or any stylebook you provide.
- Substantive editing: I proofread, restructure awkward sentences, correct grammar and inaccuracies, make suggestions on content organization, theme and voice. I create a document that the original writer would be proud of.
